I am an international educational consultant and coach.

I was a teacher and school leader for more than 20 years, teaching in schools across Asia as well as in the UK. I have now transitioned away from the classroom to use my skills and experience to support school leaders, parents and students on an individual basis. My family calls me ‘the girl who gets things done!’. I am energetic and action-focused; a problem solver who is ready to support you on your journey.

My childhood was blessed with the continuity of middle-class Edinburgh, but I yearned for adventure. I was always passionate about travel: from devouring books on explorers as a child, to planning my own foreign adventures, to studying geography, to living abroad.

For more than two decades, my husband and I have managed dual international careers. These have taken us, and our children, to Hong Kong, Beijing, New Delhi, and Yangon, as well as stints in England. This has been hugely rewarding and exciting, but it has also been a life of near constant change. Progressing quickly through the chaos and fear of a new situation into the learning-and-growth zone is key to managing this change. Much of my work is about helping individuals deal with changing situations, whether that be school leaders embarking on new projects, or parents and their children who are moving country or school.

I have always been passionate about education. I wanted to be a teacher from an early age and have loved teaching a range of different curricula in England and abroad: from the English national curriculum, to the IB primary years programme, to Reggio Emilia, to Common Entrance. But education is more than schooling. I believe that life is a journey of discovery: discovering people, places, passions, but most of all discovering and appreciating who we are as individuals; and working out how to be the best version of ourselves.

Curiosity and discovery forms the basis of my work, whether it be with students, teachers, school leaders or parents. I facilitate learning, growth and self-awareness to help people navigate change, weather challenges and feel empowered on their journey through life.

“Education is a lifelong journey, whose destination expands as you travel.” Jim Stovall

My Ethos and Values

My life’s journey has been one of learning and exploration, and I have spent most of it in education.

Many people have influenced my educational journey: my own teachers, my students, colleagues, parents and friends. Thinkers such as Ken Robinson, Carl Rogers, Alfie Kohn and Carol Dweck have also had a big impact.

Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Good teachers ignite curiosity and a desire to learn more. They involve their students in their learning. When that is combined with situations which give people an opportunity to work with others, and reflect on their learning, that’s when things really take off. Ken Robinson sums this up, “Part of education is learning. And what drives learning is curiosity and collaboration.”

Too often educational success is determined by exam results. Alfie Kohn suggests that educational success should better be measured by how strong one’s desire is to keep learning. Look at successful people and you will see that learning is at the heart of all they do. Each day brings new opportunities to learn about ourselves, others and the world. I love learning about how we learn! And I love putting into practice what I learn, and helping others do so too.

Self-awareness is an undervalued aspect of our education system. As Brene Brown says, “What we know matters, but who we are matters more.” Without self-awareness, we can’t play to our strengths or compensate for the areas where we are less strong. Part of self-awareness is understanding our values. This can be empowering because our values provide a deep understanding of who we are, and who we want to be. Making time for personal reflection and goal-setting is essential if we are to lead a life congruent with our values.

This also helps us to achieve balance in our lives. Balance feels good, and yet often seems elusive. In recent years, the binary idea of work-life balance has morphed to “life balance”. Each individual’s idea of perfect balance is different. Understanding our values helps us to reflect on what balance means to us on a daily, weekly, or yearly basis. I have created tools and prompts to help my coaching clients reflect on life balance. When life balance feels out of sync, Dr Seuss’s words can bring a smile: “Step with care and great tact. And remember life’s a great balancing act.”

Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that “change was the only constant in life”. Change happens all the time – some change we initiate, some we don’t, some is welcome, some is not. Stress occurs when we are outside of our comfort zone. So change – even good change – is stressful. The more change, the more stress. On the positive side, learning also takes place outside our comfort zone. Adapting to change requires time, energy and courage, but it allows us to stretch and grow – provided we keep an open mind. Carol Dweck explains that, “In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening.” I help support people through change in a way that minimises stress and maximises opportunities so that it is indeed exciting rather than threatening.

My life abroad and my time in the classroom has exposed me to great diversity of culture, language and thought; igniting my awe and appreciation. A joy in my work is the non-judgemental discovery of each unique person and helping them recognise, accept and celebrate that uniqueness. Carl Rogers sums these feelings up: “People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.’ I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”

I’m curious, tell me more …
